Luck , pitching help Jays avert sweep

The Toronto Blue Jays were given a little inspiration from their team of 30 years ago on Sunday and then went out to defeat the New York Yankees 3-1.

Tough luck: Another good outing for Severino, who went six innings, allowed five hits and three runs, and struck out nine, but was victimized by his defense (see below), his team’s offense (only one run on Sunday and a total of two in his three starts so far) and honestly, his own inability to make a big pitch after a third-inning misplay. They didn’t trade for Troy Tulowitzki just because he’s the best all around shortstop in baseball.

5th inning: Brian McCann leads off, is hit with a pitch, and is subsequently erased via a double play. He is stranded. Drew struck out. Ellsbury homered to right on a 0-1 count.
