Billy Hamilton has career night as Reds beat Dodgers
On Sunday, he hit a go-ahead home run to win his eighth straight decision, lowering his major league-leading ERA to 1.58 with seven sharp innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Cincinnati Reds 2-1.
“I gave it everything I had. So when he’s not swinging the bat well, it certainly stands out”, Price said. “Glad it only lasted like three games”. I mean it felt really good. “It’s just the way it turned out”.
Joc Pederson and Greinke hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fourth.
“He battled his butt off. He’s a bulldog”. “Just two pitches that we’d probably like to have back”. While New York does have CC Sabathia’s rather hefty contract on the books for 2016 and perhaps 2017, they have certainly showed the ability to take on salary if it means winning. “I took advantage of my versatility, and that’s why I’m here – because I can play a lot of positions”. After tossing 45 2/3 scoreless innings, considering ten earned runs crossing the plate over the last five outings as struggling could be understandable. Running high into the All-Star break was a plus, but this mid season skid better get tossed behind them soon if they want to remain in playoff contention, before the Nets run away with the division.
Greinke also delivered seven innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.
Greinke then got No. 9 hitter Billy Hamilton to ground out to third, and his solid all-around performance was finished after seven innings. But DeSclafani struck out Ethier and Puig. He came off the bench in the fifth inning Thursday and will start Friday. “But on the field, I don’t think there’s anything he can’t do”, Ethier said. “He said ‘do you think we should throw a slider in the dirt?’ I said ‘that sounds great.’ He executed it. It’s nice to go out there, talk about a sequence, execute it and it worked”.
That is usually a sign that the ball is going to fly out of Dodger Stadium at an alarming rate. “It’s good for everybody”. Byrd lined a double off the left-field wall with one out, then Barnhart walked.
The 24-year-old lefty gave up home runs to Yasiel Puig, Justin Turner and Kike Hernandez – all in a span of nine batters. “It wasn’t a hard choice”. Fortunately for Lorenzen, Cincinnati’s general manager Walt Jocketty looked over the poor start and promoted him to the Big Leagues, where he immediately made a positive impact.
Miller struck out Ben Revere and Troy Tulowitzki with runners on second and third to close out the victory.
Honorable Mentions are due to: Joey Votto, who continued his torrid stretch with a double, single, and walk; Marlon Byrd, who doubled, singled, and scored the Reds lone run; J.J.
This isn’t the first time a Dodgers columnist has called out the team for not having a good enough “third wheel” in the starting rotation.
Pederson propelled a 94 miles per hour fastball from right-hander Anthony DeSclafani halfway up the center-field bleachers for his 23rd homer of the season.
