RB Johnson signs with Cardinals

David Johnson, the Cardinals third round pick, has been suffering with a hamstring injury and until August 17 did not practice.

Johnson is not one of the most pursued free agents due to an arrest in the offseason for openly carrying a weapon although no charges have been made against the veteran running back. Johnson spent the first six years of his career in Tennessee before spending just one season with the Jets.

Andre Ellington has shown that he can be a big-play back, but he hasn’t shown he can handle a huge workload. We’ll see how this situation plays out through the preseason, but Ellington looks like a poor value at his current fourth-round ADP. Not even the late Junior Seau, a newly inducted Hall of Famer, or LaDainian Tomlinson, who’s probably Canton-bound, got to finish their careers as Chargers.

Johnson’s best year was 2009, when he led the NFL with 2,006 rushing yards. Last week was pretty rough with receiver Michael Floyd dislocating a few fingers and requiring immediate surgery. The shooting killed the driver and wounded another passenger. “I thought Stepfan (Taylor) ran hard, Robert Hughes ran hard”.

To make room on the roster, the Cardinals waived injured safety Brandon Person, who tore his ACL Saturday.
