Cameron Maybin: Maybin homers, but Braves fall to Padres
Cameron Maybin ended the stalemate with a leadoff homer as the Braves posted their fifth win in seven home games.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-hander from Cascade, Iowa, allowed five hits and two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings of work as the San Diego Padres beat the Atlanta Braves, 5-3, at Petco Park in San Diego.
The San Diego Padres look for a win after splitting their last eight games.
Rea was lifted after allowing A.J. Pierzynski’s RBI single with two outs in the sixth. It was a nice bounceback effort by the 24-year-old Venezuelan rookie after surrendering 15 runs and 19 hits over his previous two outings. Rea was 2-2 with a 4.39 ERA in six starts in El Paso after going 3-2 with a 1.08 ERA in 12 turns with Double-A San Antonio this season. Derek Norris hit an RBI single with one out and Venable followed with a two-run single to right. Rea struck out four, walked one and threw 93 pitches, including 56 for strikes.
The Padres are 26-29 at home this season. This will be Rea’s first career game against the Braves. OF Wil Myers (wrist) has increased his swinging regimen and could take batting practice this week. They will host the Atlanta Braves (53-64) of the NL East. He has won only once in his last 13 starts and pitched seven innings only three times in that span.
