A daily cup of Coffee to fight colon cancer
Boston cancer researchers have found that drinking coffee every day may improve the survival rate among colon cancer patients. “If you are a coffee drinker and are being treated for colon cancer, don’t stop”, he said.
“Two to three cups of coffee daily had a more modest benefit, while little protection was associated with one cup or less”, reported Charles Fuchs, director of the gastrointestinal cancer centre at Dana-Farber.
The research was conducted on about 1000 patients who had undergone surgery and chemotherapy for stage III colon cancer.
The study from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute says, for the first time, there’s a link between coffee drinking and longer life for colon cancer patients.
Stage III disease means that the colon cancer has been found in the lymph nodes near the original tumor site, but not elsewhere in the body. But Dr Fuchs was hesitant to make recommendations to patients until they are confirmed in other studies.
It’s the most current within the sequence of research studies displayed the advantages tea, that may lower the potential risk of diabetes, Parkinson’s and cancer, based on NBC News.
Throughout the study, patients logged how often they consumed caffeinated coffee, decaffeinated coffee, and non-herbal tea, as well as other food items, vitamin and mineral supplements. “But if you’re not a coffee drinker and wondering whether to start, you should first discuss it with your physician”.
Previous studies have shown coffee may have benefits against other cancers such as breast cancer, melanoma and prostate cancer.
Cancer Council of Australia said it does not specifically recommend increasing or decreasing coffee consumption to reduce cancer risk or prevent recurrence.
Dr. Alok Khorana of the Cleveland Clinic says the role coffee plays needs more study.
