Jets QB Geno Smith breaks jaw after sucker-punch by teammate
Smith took to Instagram and posted a picture of himself sitting in a vehicle – mouth closed and looking stern – and a simple message: “ILL BE BACK”. “Had nothing to do with football”. It was something very childish.
That’s the analysis sports fans were treated to by ESPN’s Cris Carter, who blamed Jets quarterback Geno Smith for getting himself punched in the face because he’s not a good enough leader.
Enemkpali apologized after being released, saying he and Smith “let our frustration get the best of us”. I deeply regret and apologize for my actions.
Adam Schefter claims Ikemefuna Enemkpali punched Geno Smith for failing to follow through on a charity appearance. “Something you don’t tolerate”. “It’s something very childish that sixth-graders could have talked about…”
The Jets released him immediately, and it will be up to the quarterback if he wants to press charges. The Jets had no comment when reached by CNN.
A Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s deputy who had responded to a 911 call about the incident said he saw Enemkpali, still struggling from the pepper spray, take another shot at the moonlighting office, this time hitting him in the face. Per court records, Enemkpali received a suspended jail sentence and was put on 13 months’ probation.
Enemkpali, 24, was drafted by the Jets in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL draft.
So, with that being said, the Jets are down a quarterback on the roster. His poor showing last year already had some fans pulling for newly signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to win the starting job over him in the preseason.
Needless to say, the Jets will more than likely have Fitzpatrick deemed their starting quarterback and possibly bring in another option as his backup.
The incident prompted a wave of reaction from NFL analysts and players – some of it targeting Smith’s role in the altercation. Massie, entering his fourth season in the NFL, started every game at right tackle for Arizona last season.
