Bournemouth coach wants offside ruling
Christian Benteke scored the only goal, getting on the end of a Jordan Henderson cross that Philippe Coutinho also tried to reach despite being in an offside position.
Summer signing Benteke became the hero at Anfield for scoring the game’s decisive goal in the 25 minute, giving the Reds six points in their first two fixtures.
“It’s very hard for officials and players”. His hold-up play is outstanding and he’s got a wonderful touch for a big guy.
Henderson was replaced by Germany U21 global Emre Can, who has been tipped to occupy the defensive midfielder’s role in the team, but the presence of Milner has seen him being dropped down to the bench.
“There was one moment when the ball came into the box, which was one of the reasons we looked to bring him in”.
Though disappointed, the home side did not take it to heart and continued with their valiant effort to make name for themselves first time around in the Premier League.
However we have broken down the rules that reveal exactly why Liverpool’s goal should not have stood.
“And that will really help”. Hopefully the bigger picture is it gives the players confidence they can succeed at this level, we can play our style of football and still be successful.
The result over Bournemouth ensured that Liverpool maintained their winning start to the new Premier League campaign.
Henderson, Steven Gerrard’s successor as skipper, grazed the bar with an improvised shot from distance and was then unfortunate not to win a penalty for a barge by Max-Alain Gradel, while Coutinho curled a loose ball wastefully wide.
That added to the Cherries’ frustrations after having a Tommy Elphick header harshly disallowed for a foul in the opening minutes, but they were no concern of Benteke’s.
Former Manchester United defender Neville did not hold back when asked for his thoughts. “It was hugely frustrating for us tonight”. We’ve had two clean sheets in two games and we’ll be looking for a third on Monday night. We were assured it wouldn’t be and would be adhered to correctly.
“Under the new rules that’s clearly offside”.
This action has a clear impact on Bournemouth goalkeeper Artur Boruc, who can’t commit to stopping Benteke at the far post and instead has to stay central in case Coutinho gets a touch on the ball.
Liverpool visits Arsenal on Monday in its next game, and the Gunners will pose a much stiffer test of the Reds’ defensive mettle than previous opposition.
