Murray ends Djokovic hoodoo
Because of this victory, Murray will now replace tennis icon Roger Federer as the No. 2 in the rankings.
In hot, muggy conditions at Uniprix Stadium, Murray served at 3-1 in the third, already up a break.
Both players were keen to lay down a marker ahead of the US Open, which begins later this month, and first blood went to Murray as he put Djokovic under intense pressure to take the first set 6-4. The world number one made sure of a deciding set by breaking back straight away and going on to win the second set 6-4. ‘The points I’ve accumulated this year would sometimes be enough to get to No. 1 in the world, at a different time.
It appears that for some people, the high of watching one of the world’s best athletes battle it out on court just isn’t enough.
Murray claimed his 11th Masters 1000 title as Djokovic missed his chance to claim a 25th in the elite series. Djokovic has never had the kind of back injury that Murray sustained and he’s been playing without the element of doubt.
But Andy Murray beat the odds Sunday to win his third Rogers Cup Canadian Open men’s singles title.
“The thing is, streaks and stuff about losing against guys, yeah, it’s frustrating”.
“But I am glad she’s OK and everything went well”. “But each time you step on the court against someone, it’s a different match. This match will be good physically and mentally for the build up for sure”.
“You can’t believe how bad it was”.
Halep was hampered by a left leg injury and heat exhaustion and stopped in the third set. “The previous 27 matches we played against each other, they don’t mean as much as everybody else thinks”. I did fight till the last point and did try my best. “It was tough for me to finish off the match”.
“Not taking anything away from him, from his victory”, Djokovic said. I hit my forehand approach shot well at the beginning of the match and that helped me get some cheaper points. In 2011, he became only the seventh player in the history of sport to reach the semifinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments in one year.
Murray changed that, showing determination throughout the week in wins over Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller, defending Rogers Cup champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, fourth seed Kei Nishikori and Djokovic.
When asked if he felt preparations for the US Open were on track, Murray said: “It’s hard to say”.
‘I need to thank my team for that and especially Amelie, ‘ he said.
Andy Murray said: “One of the things I spoke about at the beginning of the year was consistency. I don’t feel like it’s for me to decide”.
