ITV’s Bradby in shock vehicle plunge rescue bid
ITV News’s political editor Tom Bradby has shared on Twitter his dismay when authorities failed to save a man from drawing in Greece.
Writing on Twitter, Mr Bradby said he had “watched an elderly man commit suicide in Greece by driving his auto off the harbour wall in Rafina”, a port about 20 miles from central Athens. Bradby dived in to the dock but was unable to pull the man out of the vehicle.
In a series of shocking tweets, the 48-year-old journalist revealed how he dived into the harbour in a desperate attempt to save him, as Greek officials allegedly stood by and watched.
According to Greek English newspaper Ekathimireni, the coastguard and traffic police had been placed on standby in ports including Rafina, to accommodate for the national holiday on August 15.
Bradby, 48, said only one of “nine or 10” police officers and officials at the scene went into the water to try and rescue him. The rest just watched.
“Am shaking with shock and anger”.
Bradby – a good friend of Prince William – has worked for ITN, the producer of ITV News, since 1990 when he joined the organisation as an editorial trainee.
The move saves Greece from a disorderly default on its debts which could have come as soon as next week and helps to cement its membership of Europe’s single currency.
