Palestinian hunger striker regains consciousness
His strike was aimed at his administrative detention, which allows Israel to hold someone for security reasons for renewable six-month periods.
The Palestinian prisoner’s condition is now stable as he has been given fluids with permission from his family, reports say.
As Allan struggled for his life, his supporters arrived aboard buses from Jerusalem, Jaffa and the north to hold a vigil outside Barzilai Medical Center where he is being treated and detained.
If and when he regains consciousness – and if he continues to refuse to eat – Israel’s government must decide whether it will invoke a law passed in July allowing the force-feeding of prisoners when their lives are endangered. One can hope that Allan’s case will also end in a similar way.
Israel says he is being held for his alleged affiliation with Islamic Jihad, a Palestinian armed group that has carried out numerous attacks. Allan served a 30-month sentence beginning in 2006 for militant activities. The West Bank is already like a firebomb wait – ing to be ignited.
The petition to the court asking for Allen’s release on health grounds was filed after he slipped into a coma Friday.
Israel’s State Attorney’s Office on Monday offered to release hunger-striking Palestinian administrative detainee Mohammad Allan on condition that he be deported for four years.
Then, on November. 6, 2014, authorities came to Allan’s house at night and took him away, said his mother, Maazouza.
Hunger strikes are, in a few instances, successful.
It said that the foreign ministry has prepared a complete file on the Israeli killing and wounding of Palestinian young men in the field instead of arresting them, and called on the worldwide community to protect the Palestinians. He was shaking, she said, but remained resolute.
Israel already has tried all its tools to force Allan to surrender. He is sedated, receiving vitamins and saline through an IV.
“This was a test for us”, said Dr. Tami Karni, a Tel Aviv surgeon and the ethics chairwoman of the Israeli Medical Association, whose 22,000 members comprise nearly all doctors in Israel. Israeli officials must hear the voice of the world demanding that this threat of torture be stopped, and that Allan, imprisoned without charge or trial, be freed.
Force-feeding requires restraining a conscious and shackled prisoner and inserting a tube into the stomach.
“The only scenario he will accept is his immediate release”, Jamal Hatib, the lawyer for Mohammed Allaan, told Army Radio. Allan made no request before falling unconscious as to whether he wanted to receive life-saving treatment, al-Khatib said. In the meantime, they asked both sides to try reaching a compromise on the matter.
