Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid to undergo surgery next week
Embiid will miss the entirety of the 2015-2016 season following surgery that was announced by the Sixers earlier this summer.
After radio silence and a longer waiting period than initially expected, Joel Embiid will reportedly undergo surgery on his right foot that will cause him to miss his second straight season.
Embiid will undergo surgery on his foot Tuesday, Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports reports.
Meanwhile, ESPN indicated that Embiid’s right foot injury was not covered by the league’s insurance policy, and so the Sixers must pay his $9 million salary stipulated in the first two years of his rookie contract even though he had not played a single game for the ball club.
The Kansas product was the No. 3 overall selection in the 2014 National Basketball Association Draft after falling from being the consensus top pick when he injured his foot during a pre-draft workout. Yahoo! added that a Connecticut scan on Embiid’s foot showed it hadn’t healed as much as doctors anticipated, prompting the second surgery.
In the mean time, Philadelphia is not out of options as the team has three other centers on its roster in rookie Jahlil Okafor, Nerlens Noel and Henry Sims.
The Cameroon national last played nearly two years ago for his college team, the Jayhawks.
