Great white shark catches air trying to capture seal off Cape Cod
The shark jumped out of the water to try and grab the seal, but the seal managed to wiggle out of the way. The best part? He caught the whole thing on video.
Researchers from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy and the state make twice-weekly trips to the waters off Chatham to document great whites.
The shark failed, though, and the seal was able to get away.
The conservancy posted a photo on its Twitter feed of blood in the water and a dark shape beneath, saying, “The research team witnessed a successful predation (white shark eating a seal) today”. However, as you can see, seals do put up quite the fight when they are being stalked by a predator.
Researchers said there have been more than a dozen great white shark sightings this month alone.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the Atlantic White Shark Conservatory is conducting a multi-year “population study” which focuses on white sharks in the New England area – mainly in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
“White Shark 0, Seal 1”, Skomal scored the video. In addition to the video shot on Monday, Skomal also tagged another two great white sharks.
