Israeli police shoot, kill Palestinian after stabbing of officer
Ashkelon is bracing itself for more protests on Monday outside the hospital where Palestinian prisoner Mohammed Allan, hunger striking for over two months, is being kept.
A Palestinian, on a hunger strike in an Israeli jail for the past 60 days, has entered into a coma, his lawyer said Friday.
Allan’s lawyers appealed to the Supreme Court to order him released immediately due to his failing health.
The bill was approved less than a month after Israel was forced to release Khader Adnan, a famous former Palestinian prisoner, whose 56-day-long hunger strike brought him to the brink of death.
Israel has not formally charged Allan with any crime but said he was involved in “grave terrorism” on behalf of Islamic Jihad, which has threatened attacks against Israel if he dies.
“This demonstration was supposed to be the highlight of the struggle for Allan, but the police, as usual when it comes to Palestinians, had other plans”, said political activist Naji Abbas.
Clashes with police, including stone-throwing from both sides, erupted outside the hospital where Jewish protesters also broke the windows of a Palestinian television news vehicle.
“Israeli authorities consider anyone who has parents or grandparents who were born or lived in the West Bank or Gaza to have a claim to a PA ID.
He is in a medically induced coma and on a respirator, which is necessary for his care”.
During the hearing, Rubinstein asked the state representative attorney Yochi Gnessin what would happen if Allan were to be released and reoffend, and what would stop the state from arresting him again.
Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan, writing on Twitter, called the petition for his release “ludicrous”, as Allan’s medical endangerment was self-inflicted.
Many believe this may be a step toward force feeding him, a practice which according to the Israel Medical Association is a “form of torture”, yet was sanctioned by the Knesset with a new law last month.
The force-feeding bill is intended to prevent future capitulation to Palestinian prisoners, who have in recent years won demands after long hunger strikes that grabbed worldwide attention.
Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where Mohammad Allaan is hospitalized. Allan has been held without charge or trial since November 2014. “He considered Israeli administrative detention barbaric even before his own detention“, Ameed told Anadolu Agency. What they really mean to say is: Israel is an egalitarian democracy, which violates human rights in an equal manner.
If the court does decide to release him, it is likely to cause a backlash amongst right-wing Israelis.
The prisoners club said that after regaining consciousness, Allan “has agreed, after detailed explanations about his condition situation, to take some supplements for 24 hours while he waits for a resolution to his case”.
