For nearly all of the 2010s, Melbourne, Australia has been standing tall as the most livable city in the entire world.
Melbourne, Australia, was selected as the world’s most livable city for the fifth consecutive year, according to The Economist Intelligence Unit survey released on Tuesday.
Both surveys agreed that Vienna ranked as the second most livable city in the world.
Among the results, 57 of the cities surveyed declined in livability over the past five years due to problems such as terrorist shootings in France and Tunisia, civil unrest in the U.S., and conflicts in Syria, Ukraine, and Libya.
Melbourne, Australia sits at the top of the list. So if you’ve been thinking about moving, now you know where to go. The list shows scores for lifestyle challenges in 140 cities worldwide, and is based on a variety of factors including: health care, education, culture, environment and infrastructure.
Melbourne scored a 97.5, just two-and-a-half points shy of a flawless score. In the Economist survey, three Canadian cities were ranked in the top five – Vancouver at No. 3, Toronto at No. 4, and Calgary tied for No. 5 with Adelaide, Australia.
However, Hong Kong remains in the top tier with a score of 88.8, with its residents enjoying freedom in most aspects of their life. Tokyo, Japan appeared on the list at number 15.
The Liveability Ranking reflects a marked increase in global instability over the last 12 months.
As for the US, the report notes that “North American cities have largely seen declines” and points to civil unrest, police brutality, and the “the deaths of a number of black people in police custody” as partial reasons.
