Teen credits Siri with saving his life after truck collapses on him
Emergency dispatchers heard his screams for help, while the smartphone helped to reveal his location.
The boy was under almost 5,000 pounds of metal for seven minutes, after a jack holding the truck above the ground collapsed. The call likely saved his life.
Tamron Hall, Al Roker and Natalie Morales talk about the dramatic story of 18-year-old Sam Ray, who was pinned under the truck he was working on when Siri awoke in the iPhone in his back pocket. Fortunately, as Ray struggled, his iPhone activated Siri, Apple’s built-in voice activated assistant. Clogging up the emergency hotline, 40 percent of calls to 911 are courtesy of the butt-dial.
She said she knew his general location from the cellphone signal, but Ray helped them pinpoint his exact whereabouts. The voice assistant then automatically called the Rutherford County dispatcher Christina Lee. “But he was yelling his address, and that was the best thing he could have done”.
“When I heard a woman talking from inside my pocket, I just started shouting”, Ray said in a statement from Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, where he was treated.
Sam Ray says that without Siri, he might not have survived his accident. Miller also said this is the first case he is aware of in which a patient in a crisis situation managed to use Siri to reach 911.
“I had a amusing noise underneath that I thought needed attention”, he said. Ray will head to college in Mississippi next month to possibly pursue a career in the ministry.
