Buxton recalled by Twins as Hicks goes on the DL
Byron Buxton will be recalled to take Hicks’ place on the roster, the Twins announced after the game.
As if getting swept in a three-game series at Yankee Stadium wasn’t bad enough, now the Twins have placed center fielder Aaron Hicks on the disabled list with a hamstring injury suffered during today’s game.
Hicks hit a grounder to third in the sixth inning and tried to beat out the throw to first, but came up lame after reaching the bag.
Hicks was replaced in center field the following inning by Eddie Rosario.
Calling up Buxton from Class AAA Rochester was the corresponding move.
Buxton, 21, made his major-league debut in June and played 11 games before suffering a wrist injury. Buxton crashed into the outfield wall on Sunday and received attention from the team trainer. The top prospect is hitting.412/.444/.549 in his 12 games in the worldwide League after struggling at the plate in his brief taste in the big leagues.
Hicks has been impressive since coming off the 15-day disabled list on July 3, hitting.
The Twins decided to option him back to the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings once he returned to full strength rather than bring him right back to the majors.
– Reliever Blaine Boyer (elbow) had a scheduled off day from throwing Wednesday.
Buxton, the No. 1 prospect in baseball by MLB.com and Baseball Prospectus, had seven his in 37 MLB at-bats before he was injured.
