Dance says Officer Kevin Parker Jr.is in stable condition at a Tupelo hospital.
Dance said Parker and other officers responded to a prowler call around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The officer’s vest stopped the bullet to his chest and saved his life according to Dance.
“Someone who’s bold enough to take a police officers gun from him and shoot him, could have done anything they wanted to do”, Nanney said.
“He said he nearly clipped him with the auto”, he said.
During the fight, Parker said the suspect turned the gun directly at his chest and pulled the trigger twice. He said he’s not sure why Parker didn’t shoot the man. “With all the recent media attention, I’m sure that did factor into his mind”.
Two men who were at the public housing complex were taken into custody for questioning.
“Officer Parker never relinquished his weapon”. Then I heard someone screaming, ‘What’s going on?
Dance said it is a prime example of just how quickly a situation can turn deadly.
Investigators said a man jumped out of the woods and there was a struggle between the suspect and officer Parker.
“I’m still kind of in a daze because it’s just way too close for comfort”, said caller Brenda Nanney. “I’ve been sick at my stomach ever since”.
“I really, really feel bad”, Nanney said. “No officer wants to shoot someone, we all want to finish our career without shooting anyone, and most of us do”.
An early morning shooting rocked a small neighborhood in Corinth.
