Chevy Adding Air Conditioner for Your Phone | News & Opinion
The system is called Active Phone Cooling and it will be available in several Chevy vehicles, including 2016 Impala and Malibu models. While testing a smartphone wireless charging feature, they noticed some smartphone would suspend charging or shut off altogether after only a few minutes in high temperatures inside a car’s cabin.
The problem that the new technology solves, its that its allows the cooled HVAC air in the area where the smartphones are placed, keeping them cool while charging.
Not only did Chevrolet win my heart with its heartwarming emoji promo starring Norm Macdonald, the company has announced that it’s created an air conditioner specifically for your overheating phone.
Previous tests have shown that smartphones tend to reach alarmingly high temperatures when charged in the newly added wireless compartment. The issue of phone batteries overheating is genuine and comes while charging in places with extreme climates.
As smartphones get hotter, expect custom cooling solutions like this to become commonplace. Active cooling in a hot vehicle would certainly help out with all that work.
Although it might seem like an obvious thing to do, Chevy claims that it’s the first carmaker in the world to offer it. Engineer Dan Lascu said: “Innovation doesn’t mean reinventing the wheel”. The built-in wireless charging pads will be compatible to a lot of devices, although some phones will require an accessory that will transform their back panels into a charging panel. “Sometimes simplicity offers the most elegant solution to a problem”, and we agree.
