Pistorius prosecutors file appeal papers at Supreme Court
Family and friends of both Pistorius and Ms Steenkamp have mostly declined to comment on his release.
He was found guilty of culpable homicide last year by Judge Thokozile Masipa after a trial that attracted massive local and worldwide attention, as the feted athlete cried and vomited through harrowing testimony of Steenkamp’s final moments.
According to CNN, he is expected to be released from a prison and South Africa and be put under house arrest this week. He is now eligible for release in line with guidelines that allow “non-dangerous” prisoners to only spend a sixth of a custodial sentence behind bars. Her life was cut short after a bad tragedy at the home of her boyfriend and Olympic athlete, Oscar Pistorius.
It is expected that he will have to undertake community service, undergo regular mental health checks and also refrain from drinking alcohol.
Pistorius became an icon after he competed in the two most prestigious sport events, the Paralympics and Olympics.
State prosecutors want his conviction to be reviewed and converted to murder, with a minimum sentence of 15 years.
However, the State is to file its heads of argument in its appeal against the Pistorius’ ruling at the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein on Monday, News 24 reported.
Prosecutors say Pistorius knew there was someone hiding behind the door when he fired, and that this amounts to the level of intent required for murder. He claimed that he mistakenly shot Steenkamp, thinking she was a risky intruder.
OSCAR Pistorius will only be able to leave his house to go to church when he is freed from jail next week.
“Incarceration of 10 months for taking a life is just not sufficient”, they stated.
Pistorius does not dispute that he shot model and law graduate Reeva Steenkamp four times through a locked toilet door in his Pretoria home in the early hours of the Valentine’s Day in 2013.
