‘Straight Outta Compton’ Posts Big $60.2 Million Opening Weekend
“Straight Outta Compton” has broken August Box Office records with a spectacular $60m opening weekend.
“‘Straight Outta Compton’ is for Universal yet another example of a perfectly realized distribution and marketing plan that brought an important story to the big screen”, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak.
Pulling in $60.2 million in U.S. box office revenue, “Compton” has spent a total $23.1 million in national TV dollars, according to iSpot.tv – with the major build up of its spending started around July 20.
Forbes’ Scott Mendelson wrote, though, that “Straight Outta Compton’s” success did not catch him off guard like others.
“I think there was great hope that it would resonate”, Carpou said, “and it did that, but it also turned around the box office“.
The NWA biopic, produced by Dr Dre and Ice Cube, was expected to make around half that figure, having cost $29m (£18.5m) to make. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. PG-13-rated adaptation of the 1960s television series “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” debuted in third place, behind “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, ” with a sluggish $13.5 million.
Eighth place went to animated comedy sequel “Minions“, featuring the yellow mischief-making creatures, with US$5.1 million. And when the trailer hit we knew it was a guaranteed hit. Rounding out the top five was the psychological thriller “The Gift” which added another $6.5 million to its tally. The latest blockbuster they have purchased rights to is ‘Straight Outta Compton‘. CinemaScore says most are giving an “A” grade. But it’s Universal’s weekend to celebrate once more in what has become a banner year for the studio. The group N.W.A.is still revered among music fans, with their debut album, which gave the movie its name, often called one of the best of all time by critics. (And that gap could yet close with Monday’s final numbers.).
