Murray beats Djokovic in Montreal Men’s Tennis Final
I would say the margins were so fine…
He had not beaten Djokovic since the 2013 Wimbledon final. His semi-finals opponent, Chardy, was having a fantastic week in Montreal until his match with Djokovic.
It is a welcome confidence boost for Murray after last week’s early exit in Washington and he has replaced Roger Federer as world number two.
Another good news is that Andy Murray has now become a real contender for the coming US Open. That one game when I had I think four, five opportunities to break back, he just came up always with big serves, so I couldn’t do much.
‘I need to thank my team for that and especially Amelie, ‘ he said. “That helped”.
Winning the first set was vital for Murray, who lost the last eight matches to Djokovic after dropping the opening frame.
Djokovic, chasing a 25th Masters title, saw off three championship points at 5-2 before Murray served out for the match.
“I thought what made the difference was his serve and my serve. I didn’t serve well the first set and a half”, Djokovic said.
The Wimbledon champion is perched on the numero uno spot in the ATP rankings by a distance and probably the only way someone could upset his rhythm was by giving him a sense of “dizziness”. “It’s not easy now playing against some the greatest players ever to play the game“.
Many felt that Murray’s poor recent record against Djokovic was becoming a psychological burden for him.
Djokovic looks nearly unreachable at the summit of the standings, though, as the Serb has won two of the three grand slam titles this season, only losing to Stanislas Wawrinka in the final of the French Open before succumbing to Murray on Sunday. “But I’m happy with my good week”.
The apparent haze of marijuana smoke didn’t keep Djokovic from dispatching Jeremy Chardy, 6-4, 6-4. “When I reflect on the week, of course it’s positive”, said the top seed.
“Andy, who is all around player, very complete, has been somebody that has been around for so many years”.
It was a welcome low-stress match for the Serbian, who was pushed the brink of elimination in his Friday quarter-final, during which he survived two match points to beat 87th-ranked Latvian Ernests Gulbis.
