Phillies’ Maikel Franco possibly done for season with fractured wrist
Phillies third-baseman Maikel Franco is headed for the 15-day disabled list the team announced on Tuesday.
Franco will wear a brace on his left wrist for the next 2-3 weeks and then be re-evaluated. But he has been out of the lineup since.
In 77 games for the Phillies, he batted. The third baseman had forced his way into the conversation with a slash line of.277/.340/.490 with 13 homers, 48 RBIs and 22 doubles in 325 plate appearances.
The Phillies recalled righthanded-hitting outfielder Aaron Altherr from Lehigh Valley to take Franco’s place on the active roster. 294 in 51 games, with eight home runs, 38 RBIs and an OPS of.858. “If it looks like it’s affecting his approach offensively then we might make an adjustment”. The rookie beat the Jays in his only career start against them, going six innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out two and walking two. But I don’t see any reason why it should. Despite early indications that the injury was not serious, Franco has not played since. “He’s an outstanding defender”.
Philadelphia has turned to Cesar Hernandez and Andres Blanco as the fill-ins at third base and Franco’s fantastic rookie season is on hold after he hit. “I think he did his arcs, some sprint work he’s done on the outside of the infield”, Amaro said. “He’s going to get a chance to play”.
“That isn’t one of the things we want to do, but under the circumstances, it’s the best way to keep him in the lineup”, Mackanin said of Hernandez.
“We’re really happy with the way he’s progressed, starting with last offseason in winter ball”, Amaro said. He’s having a heck of a year for us.
