Nebraska WR De’Mornay Pierson-El out 6-8 weeks
Head coach Mike Riley announced today that sophomore wide receiver and kick returner De’Mornay Pierson-El will miss “six to eight weeks” after suffering a foot injury on Tuesday.
Pierson-El also made six starts at receiver in the second half of last season, with his best game coming in the Holiday Bowl against USC.
And what about replacing Pierson-El’s production? Riley also confirmed that freshman receiver Lavan Alston will be out for the season after suffering a knee injury during Tuesday’s practice. “I suppose the silver lining is people like Stanley Morgan have gotten a lot of turns and made the most of it”. “He is making a major move, at this time he is obviously not redshirting and getting ready to play”.
“The receiving deal, it’s been very disruptive”, Riley said, per Sipple.
With that variety of injuries impacting the position, the Huskers will rely more heavily on junior Jordan Westerkamp (44 catches, 747 yards, 5 TDs last season) and senior Jamal Turner (64 career catches for 799 yards and 4 TDs) returning from an Achilles injury that cost him the majority of the 2014 season. “One would presume that other players will get a look there, as well”.
Nebraska returns to the field Wednesday morning.
That is a big issue to Nebraska’s wideout problems, but a BIGGER wrench to the Punt Returning danger that Pierson-El has given Nebraska from previous year.
And with less than three weeks left before the season opener against BYU, Nebraska needs to see something new from its special teams nearly immediately.
