Frankfurt preview: 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe

More information on the 2016 C63 AMG Coupe should become available following its debut, which may happen at the Frankfurt Motor Show later next month. This is the best official look we have yet on the C63 AMG coupe, which is expected to share its powertrain with the existing C63 sedan.

The new Mercedes GLE AMG 63 coupe is far from subtle as standard, but its just got even more outlandish thanks to a range of bodykit and power tuning options from LUMMA design. Mercedes-Benz’s 4.0-liter twin turbocharged V8 will return, delivering 469 horsepower and 479 lb-ft or 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft in AMG S models.

In order to accommodate bigger wheels and tires, the C63’s track was widened by 64mm at the front and 66mm at the back. This is the same engine that powers the AMG GT, and which propelled the C63 S sedan to 60 in 3.9 seconds in our testing.

The C63 rides on a sport-tuned suspension that uses a four-link setup at the front and multi-link rear axle that was specifically designed for the Coupe.

It’s refreshing to know that Mercedes has fitted a mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD) to the C63 (the S model comes with an electronic LSD to control inner wheel motion during fast cornering).

Wide arches, discreet spoiler and larger alloys – it’s a C-class Coupe on steroids!

In fact, the only body panels shared between the two coupes are the doors, roof and trunk lid. The sound quality of the standard Burmester audio system is fairly stunning, although we must admit it wouldn’t see much use in our theoretical personal C63, as we prefer the outgoing soundtrack of the exhaust system.

The AMG C63 AMG models both get substantial upgrades over the regular coupe, according to Mercedes.
