Braves stinging backers in San Diego visits

San Diego, which took two of three from Cincinnati at home before doing the same in Colorado over the weekend, opened the series against Atlanta with a 5-3 triumph Monday.

Colin Rea’s second big league start was less dramatic than his first.

For Tuesday’s game the Padres start James Shields who has allowed 144 hits and 66 earned runs while striking out 167 over 152.2 innings for an 8-5 record and a 3.89 ERA. Perez was outstanding in his first career turn against San Diego on June 10, allowing an unearned run and four hits in seven innings en route to victory. He allowed one run on two hits and a walk.

Matt Kemp homered to right for San Diego in the fifth, his 14th. Cameron Maybin was the hitting star for the Braves as he returned to San Diego for the first time since being traded on the eve of Opening Day.

“After Perez got out of a two-on, none-outs jam in the third, Maybin homered to lead off the Braves”™ fourth and cut the lead to 4-2. “Just one inning. It started with Norris’ chopper and he couldn’t get an out there and a base hit by Venable and scored two”. I thought he commanded his fastball for the most part.

Jedd Gyorko became the fourth Padre to start at shortstop this season.

The Padres jumped on Perez for three runs in the second inning, with former brave Justin Upton getting things started with a leadoff single. OF Wil Myers (wrist) has increased his swinging regimen and could take batting practice this week. He has won only once in his last 13 starts and pitched seven innings only three times in that span.
