Students begin moving into Hawaii dorms after fatal fall
Honolulu police said a 24-year-old man was trying to bring an apparently distraught 19-year-old inside the building from a window ledge.
The man who attempted to stop a suicide attempt plummets to his own death at the Hale Wainani dorm at the University of Hawaii. They were taken to the hospital, where Bennett was pronounced dead, while the 19 year old man was in critical condition. The names of the two men have not been released.
A university spokesperson, Dan Meisenzahl, said the school is investigating whether the student code of conduct was broken during the course of the evening.
Two men who attended a party in a college dormitory this weekend when preventing an apparent suicide did not succeed, Honolulu police said, according to a Fox News report. “We don’t ever want to see anybody get hurt or killed on campus and our condolences go out to their family”.
The medical examiner’s office says an autopsy is scheduled Monday for the 24-year-old.
There is also a possibility that one or two of the students who occupied the room were actually there when the tragedy happened, according to a university spokesman. “Getting intoxicated could have pushed him over the edge”.
Counseling services have been offered to all university students. The dorm houses more than 600 students during the school year.
The scene outside University of Hawaii’s flagship campus was grim on Monday afternoon, as maintenance workers and cleaning staff quietly went about their business of having the dormitory in proper order before students started arriving on campus for the fall semester.
