Mets put reliever Parnell on DL
Parnell, who is coming off April 2014 Tommy John surgery, picked going on the DL with what the team said was “shoulder tendinitis”.
Bobby Parnell accepted his move to the disabled list after two very bad performances against Pittsburgh over the weekend. The Mets have been burned on several occasions with Parnell pitching in big spots, as he has failed to be a suitable setup man for Clippard and Familia.
“I will tell you one thing; they will be OK to pitch that last week of the season and beyond”, Collins said before Tuesday’s game against Baltimore. Alex Torres and Sean Gilmartin were forced into the role, although neither is a true lefty specialist. With the Mets, Verrett has a 0.73 ERA in 12.1 innings.
If there’s a silver lining, it’s that the Mets have several options that could potentially help the bullpen. He earned his first major league save on July 5 in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.
Overall, in 23 appearances this season, Parnell is 1-3 with a 5.59 ERA.
With Parnell on the sidelines, the Mets recalled right-hander Logan Verrett from Triple-A and will send the 25-year-old to the bullpen. The plan hinges on the return of Steven Matz as rosters expand on September 1. Parnell is more of a security blanket in case one of them has an off day. Hopefully those two are enough to carry an otherwise lackluster bullpen.
