Michael Schwartz/for New York Daily News Norman, seen heading to the courtroom with an NYPD detective, is accused of letting her autistic uncle “wither on the vine and die” in a horrific case of abuse that lasted two years, according to prosecutors.
A former home health care worker who starved her autistic uncle to death was charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, the Bronx District Attorney’s office said.
Police say four people were questioned in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in Pittsburgh’s East Hills section.
Naisia Norman, 22, had been responsible for taking care of her uncle James Thompson, who had severe cognitive disabilities, since late 2010, when she applied to take charge of his Supplemental Security Income, Assistant District Attorney Adam Oustatcher said. She collected his Social Security benefits, totaling $8,628 from February 2011 to February 2012, and was supposed to use the money to buy him food and medical supplies, according to authorities. But prosecutors allege that she neglected her uncle and spent just $722 on his food and medical supplies.
Naisia Norman was charged with a count of criminally negligent homicide in addition to second-degree manslaughter – both felony charges. She was ordered held on $75,000 bail. “An investigation was launched, culminating in Wednesday’s indictment”.
Daily News reports that Norman “mumbled” a plea of not guilty in response to the accusations made against her in court on Wednesday.
She could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
