Saban: Alabama QB Jake Coker out with minor foot injury
Coker, who was sidelined with a minor foot injury, returned to practice Wednesday afternoon and according to several media reports, he had few effects from the injury that kept him out just two days.
After more than a full week of practice (a total of 11 practices), the University of Alabama football program undergoes its first scrimmage of fall camp today, the first chance for players to respond and perform in game-like situations.
Saban said in the past couple of days he is unsettled on the quarterback position right now, still waiting for one of his options to emerge as the clear answer.
The only one of Alabama’s five scholarship quarterbacks Saban didn’t mention Wednesday while discussing the competition and the dividing of reps was redshirt freshman David Cornwell.
While coach Nick Saban hasn’t named a starting quarterback yet, Coker has long been considered the frontrunner after backing up Blake Sims a year ago.
“[Morris] did a nice job, and Cooper Bateman did a nice job in the scrimmage”, Saban said.
“People forget about that when, all of the sudden, the guy comes in and is supposed to be the guy”.
The second scrimmage is the final big opportunity for the quarterbacks to impress during the preseason.
“And you’ve got to win the team”. “That’s how it’s going to get decided”.
