Gunfire reported at N.C. church
Warren said there was an exchange of gunfire between a man in the church and police officers.
Bill Miller from the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office confirms that shots were fired at Maple Grove Baptist Church in Haywood County on Wednesday at 3:12 p.m.
Shots have reportedly been fired at North Carolina’s Maple Grove Baptist Church near Waynesville – close to Asheville, according to multiple news reports.
Nichols also told WHNS that the shots were fired outside the church and that there was a single shooter who acted alone. No law enforcement officer was injured.
The weapon the man had was not immediately known. No law enforcement officer was injured.
Pastor Tommy Carlisle said no one should have been in the church at the time. Emergency medical workers were called in to render aid to the gunman, but it is unclear if he was struck.
The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation was handling the investigation Wednesday night and would not say whether the suspect had been killed, or what led to the shooting.
“He was secured and being treated by EMS”, Warren said of the man after the stand-off.
