Baltimore surpasses New York City in homicides for the year
Baltimore recorded its 212th homicide Wednesday night.
The number of homicides in Baltimore so far this year has surpassed the number of homicides in New York City, WJZ media partner The Baltimore Sun reports.
According to police figures, there were 211 homicides in the city last year and 135 on this date in 2014. Criminals also may feel emboldened following this spring’s riots, in which some police held back from using force.
Two people were shot around midnight Wednesday in the 2100 block of Frederick Avenue. Both victims are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities say a former Atlantic City casino security guard who used inside knowledge to make off with more than $180,000 and four others have been indicted on charges.
Finally, a man walked into a hospital around 2 a.m. for treatment of a gunshot wound.
Representatives of the city’s police union along with criminal justice experts say that many Baltimore police have been hesitant to use force and arrest potential criminals after the six officers allegedly involved in Gray’s death were arrested, fearing potential legal repercussions.
