Monorail breakdown at Alton Towers leaves 80 people stranded
Another rollercoaster collision at United Kingdom theme park Alton Towers forced four more visitors to seek medical attention.
The incident happened in the same week the park had to issue an apology after it took up to an hour to evacuate about 80 people when the site’s monorail broke down, on Wednesday – the hottest day of the year.
An Alton Towers spokesman said: “The train drivers kept guests informed via the on board PA system and refreshments were provided” adding that delays were “within expected levels”.
“Air had a minor technical stoppage. The whole process of clearing guests from the area took 20 minutes which is within standard operating procedures”.
“Alton Towers puts the health and safety of its guests at the forefront of everything it does, which means that from time to time rides will be closed to allow for technical issues to be reviewed”, the spokeswoman continued.
The monorail incident happened four weeks after a carriage on the Smiler ride crashed into a empty carriage, seriously injuring five people, including two who have since undergone leg amputations. “The guests on the two cars walked off and we advised that they attend our medical centre as a precautionary measure. The ride reopened shortly afterwards”. The carriage came round to the end at full pace and crashed into one with a young family inside.
Miss Washington was on a first date with new boyfriend Joe Pugh when their carriage – carrying 16 people – ploughed into the one in front.
She told the BBC: “It felt like slow motion”.
“Safe to say I won’t be going again!” she said.
“I was awoken by Dan shouting my name”. “The bars were in my right knee”.
