Speedo and Misfit announce new fitness tracker
This looks a lot like the original Misfit Shine tracker that is already available but is focusing more on Swimmers with the Speedo brand, and will feature new functions aimed at helping track various swim stats.
The Speedo Shine will launch on September 1 in Apple’s retail stores, and will also be sold online through Misfit and Speedo directly.
The swim-focused tracker has the same hardware as Misfit Shine, but the firmware is different, Misfit Director of Communications Amy Puliafito told MobiHealthNews.
Best of all the Speedo Shine doesn’t require charging, at all.
Speedo has carried out its own in-pool testing with the Shine to make sure tracking is accurate and it should work with all swimming strokes. Proprietary algorithms designed by Speedo and Misfit take this data and turn it into the info you see on the app. Speedo tested for the device at its Aqualab in Nottingham, England where the company develops its swim suits.
Speedo Shine is made out of aircraft-grade aluminum and comes in a light silver color. The new Speedo Shine is a big step forward and will give swimmers the information they have always wanted, the ability to accurately track their laps, distance, calories and time. Extremely thin and comfortable, the device is meant to be worn both in and out of the water, and also tracks walking, running, cycling, and light and deep sleep. It’s still waterproof to 50m, still capable of tracking exercise via a 3-axis accelerometer, and still lasts for six months without the need for recharging thanks to its watch battery.
The new Speedo Shine joins the Misfti Shine, Flash, Flash Link, and other members of the Misfit family.
It will certainly be ready to operate with the Speedo Fit portable app creation in addition to Misfit app creation for iOS or Android. Its closest competitor is the $100 Moov Now (currently selling for a pre-order price of $60), which uses similar motion-based lap detection and also offers coaching for a much wider range of workouts.
