The Big Winners From Pew’s 2015 Social Media Survey
Because the vast majority of Americans use the internet, the figures suggest 62 per cent of all US adults are on Facebook, according to Pew. (NASDAQ:FB) secured the first position in the industry. Basically, if there’s an assumption that has been made about a social network’s users, it’s probably accurate. (NYSE:TWTR) struggles on to bring more users and business. Only those over 65 weren’t broadly represent in the social network’s user list. But the more interesting tidbit in Pew’s report is that the stereotype about Pinterest being dominated by women is true: 44 percent of online women are said to have an account with the service, while just 16 percent of online men do.
Instagram, on the other hand, requires new content daily (if not hourly) and makes exploring past items easy with its simple, mobile-friendly interface.
Facebook users also tend to have the highest engagement.
Demographically speaking, younger population is also more inclined to use Facebook, a finding consistent with the past research.
Turning to blogging platforms, 10% of online adults use Tumblr, up slightly from 6% in 2012. However, Facebook’s popularity in younger adults is far more than that of Twitter, as the latter hosts only 32% of online adults, between ages 18-29.
Twitter shares closed Thursday at $26, down $1.61 for the day, a decline of 5.8%. While the number of people using the sites isn’t growing as quickly as in the past – or at all, in certain cases – adults are spending more time on some social networks. Today, Pew released its findings in a study by Maeve Duggan called “Mobile Messaging and Social Media 2015”. For example, Pinterest holds 31% of online usage.
Facebook continues to be the dominant social networking site by a wide margin.
Twitter faces the challenge of whether its 316m monthly users can become a mainstream platform instead of a niche forum favored by journalists and celebrities.
The Pew report is based on telephone interviews conducted from March 17 through April 12 among a national sample of 1,907 adults. The social network giant owns or runs Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. Facebook can feed that data back into its flagship app to present stories to users they know are interested in a specific topic. Facebook is the most popular, but if you aren’t on Pinterest, Instagram or Kik, you may be missing out.
