At 56, John McEnroe believes he can beat Serena Williams
Kimmel asked McEnroe about who he thinks will win between him and Williams.
Williams just won her 21st Grand Slam title of her career at Wimbledon. In 1973 Billie Jean King beat 55-year-old Bobby Riggs in their celebrated contest in Houston.
The tennis player said Donald Trump once made an offer of $1 million for McEnroe and Williams to square off 15 years ago. ‘I think it’s mixed, they think I’d probably lose to Serena.
“My daughters are over there [in the studio]”, he said.
But McEnroe made it clear that there would be more than prizemoney at stake.
“And I’ve got a lot to lose because if I lose to – God forbid a woman – then I’m not allowed in any men’s locker room for the next 15 years”.
‘So that’s part of why it’s intriguing’.
Eventually, he equated this dream match to Pacquiao-Mayweather, and Kimmel had the idea of having a double billing of a rematch between the two boxers, and then a tennis match between McEnroe and Williams.
“So if they paid the kind of money that Mayweather and that other guy got…”, he said, before being interrupted.
I don’t think McEnroe has what it would take, but I would LOVE to watch that match. The US Open is the last grand slam tournament of the year and Williams is looking to complete the Calendar Slam, winning all four major titles in one tennis season.
Serena is considered by many as the greatest female tennis player of all time.
