Icher made par on each of the final seven holes.
“Obviously it’s great to get a really good start, but you can see there are some other really good scores and everybody’s playing their best”. I am quite happy. But at the Vancouver Golf Club, Henderson was five-over in her first round and then four-over in her second, missing the cut. “I don’t have glasses and I feel much older”, the formerly bespectacled Ko said when asked to compared this year’s tournament to the one three years ago.
Ko won the Canadian Open at Vancouver in 2012 and backed up in 2013, as a 16-year-old amateur, to successfully defend her title in Edmonton.
Henderson, meanwhile, had the attention of most of the fans Thursday.
“My putting was very good”, she said.
The 36-year-old Icher is seeking her first victory on the LPGA Tour and her first internationally in a decade.
Earlier this week, Henderson spoke about how, even in the spotlight, she felt no nerves and relished the expected crowds.
She was satisfied with her opening round, which was not as consistent as she would have liked. “So, I love coming back here”. When a birdie putt on the fifth hole broke right at the last moment, finishing an inch off, she allowed something of a smile-grimace.
“It’s been average”, she shrugged. “If I can just continue to build off the crowd’s energy the next couple of days I think it will be good”.
“When you make some birdies like that in a row you build some confidence”, she said.
COQUITLAM, B.C.-France’s Karine Icher made it look easy Thursday.
The US$2.25-million tournament is being held at the Vancouver Golf Club.
“I’ve just got to play my own game”. Yeah, that is the only thing that is the same….It was a lot of fun in 2012.
“I just need to hit it closer to the hole”.
Stacy Lewis, Danah Bordner, South Korea’s Kim In-Kyung, and Sweden’s Pernilla Lindberg shared third place at 68. She capped her solid round with four straight pars.
