Oscar Pistorius’ diva demands in jail revealed as shamed paralympian is warned
A spokesman for South Africa’s justice ministry said the department has not yet received a response from Pistorius’s lawyers on the decision to halt his release.
Prison visitors claimed the sprinter, who is serving five years for the manslaughter of Miss Steenkamp, had been given preferential treatment.
“The review board has four months in which to conclude the matter”, Justice Ministry spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga told Reuters. “They (correctional services) supplied him with a bath in his cell and after a month they built a bath for him because he could shower”, he said.
Mr Mentoor said the athlete made use of the official complaints system to ensure his needs were catered for.
Justice minister Michael Masutha had earlier warned he was taking legal advice on if he had the authority to “intervene” and prevent Pistorius’ early release.
Pistorius’ lawyer, Brian Webber, told The Associated Press: “We’re considering our position”.
“No decisions have been taken, and the family will take their time to calmly consider the way forward”, said Pistorius family spokesperson Anneliese Burgess.
The justice minister’s decision to review Pistorius’ early release was “valid”, said Mannie Witz, a South African criminal law expert, but continuing Pistorius’ detention could be challenged in court.
Oscar Pistorius’ diva demands in jail will blow your minds.
Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide for shooting Steenkamp four times through a locked bathroom door in his home on Valentine’s Day in 2013.
Pistorius, who has served 10 months behind bars, escaped a murder conviction after testifying that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired the gun. Before her death, Steenkamp was outspoken on issues of violence against women.
Masutha’s decision followed a petition launched by the PWMSA which said that allowing Pistorius to be freed after only 10 months in prison and during Women’s Month was an “insult” to women.
