Mehdi Abeid joins Greek side Panathinaikos

After a scattered four years in the North-East, flop worldwide midfielder Mehdi Abeid has been sent out to Panathinaikos on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee.

He has now returned to Panathinaikos where he spent a successful loan spell in 2013/14.

Abeid joined Newcastle from Lens in May 2011 and made his debut against Nottingham Forest in a League Cup tie four months later, but failed to convince McClaren’s predecessor Alan Pardew that he was worthy of a regular starting spot.

Abeid made his full global debut for Algeria, coming on as a substitute for the last 5 minutes of a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles in June.

However, injury hampered the player’s season after he suffered a fractured toe in November, while the expensive summer arrival of Georginio Wijnaldum and the revival of Vurnon Anita under Steve McClaren further blocked his route back into the team.

Newcastle United have confirmed the sale of midfielder Mehdi Abeid to Panathinaikos. The club is looking to win its first league title since 2010, and is also looking to qualify for the group stage of the Europa League. Daryl Janmaat will also miss the trip following his naive red card in the same game.
