South African prosecutors file Pistorius appeal
Pistorius, a famous amputee sprinter who served 10 months of his five-year sentence for killing his girlfriend, was due to spend the remainder of his punishment in “custodial supervision”.
According to sources, Pistorius will live at his uncle Arnolds home in Pretorias Waterkloof suburb.
Because of his disability, Pistorius has been held since 21 October in the hospital ward of Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria.
The paralympian shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on the night of Valentine’s Day in 2013, shooting four times with a large caliber weapon on the door of the bathroom where she was.
It’s still possible that Pistorius could be convicted of murder, as prosecutors are attempting to appeal the case to the South African Supreme Court.
Judge Thokozile Masipa said during sentencing that the state had failed to prove Pistorius’ intent to kill when he pulled the trigger. He will then be under a correctional supervision order, which means he will be under house arrest for the rest of his five-year sentence.
Pistorious is likely to be fitted with an electronic tag when he is released, but it is not yet known where the tracking device will go.
It’s highly unlikely. Regardless of the conditions of his release, the global Paralympic Committee has said he can only compete after his five-year sentence is completed.
Steenkamp’s parents released a statement, saying that while they forgive him, they do not want Pistorius to be released. If the conviction is elevated, the runner will be subject to at least 15 years imprisonment, according to the Library of Congress. “As the Oscar Pistorius trial comes to an end, we hope governments across the globe take robust and urgent action to end violence against women”. If released some suggest it sends the wrong message to others since Oscar Pistorius is considered a role model.
He was found guilty of ‘culpable homicide’ last September – which under South African law is not the same as murder.
