2 killed in shooting at Manhattan federal building, officials say
The incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m., at the beginning of the evening rush hour in Manhattan’s West Village area.
He says the police have a tentative identification of the man, but are not releasing it yet.
A federal agent and the gunman were both wounded, police sources said. James O’Neill, the NYPD’s chief of department, told reporters the man walked up to the metal detectors and shot the guard at close range with a handgun.
Police would not disclose information about possible victims in the shooting at 201 Varick Street, which houses an immigration court.
The gunman had no apparent ties to the company, FJC said in a statement. “At this point, the suspect shot himself in the head”.
Police officials said Downing used “two.38s or two kinds of revolvers” that he hid inside a bag until he approached the security line. Sources said this looks like this was a lone gunman, based on initial investigation.
Hector Figueroa, the president of Camara’s union, 32 BJ SEIU, said he was horrified by the news.
