Tiger Woods enters Wyndham Championship
“The first two (tournaments) were not very good at all“. But he will be looking over his shoulder at a strong field closing in behind.
He also served as a marker during the second round of the 2004 PGA at Whistling Straits, when two players from the same threesome withdrew. It’s not the low point of his career, rather it’s a continuation of a prolonged low point that he hasn’t recovered from and might not ever be able to. While he tied for 32nd, he finished six shots out of the lead. As does Jones who faded badly on the back nine. “There’s plenty of golf to be played”. He did nothing here at Whistling Straits to change that as his struggles in major tournaments continued.
At 2 under par, the world’s top-ranked player was seven shots out of the lead when second-round play was suspended because of weather.
Then, he started flailing in the sand.
He has missed the cut in four of 10 starts and shot an 82 in Phoenix and an 85 at the Memorial for his worst pro rounds, even taking a break from competition early in the year to try to sort out his game. “To have that control I need to have going forward, it’s starting to come back, which is nice”. “I don’t really want to blame it on rust, but I didn’t putt as well as I would have liked”. I just haven’t done that.
“And then I just need to do both at the same time”.
Expectations were low for the former world No. 1 as he made his way back from injury and a new swing.
“Tomorrow looks like it will be tougher conditions”, Spieth said. Shortly afterward, pressure from the global media forced Woods to admit he had cheated on his wife multiple times. I know a lot of people like Koepka so he’s not an “according-to-hoyle” sleeper, but I don’t think he’s coming in to Whistling Straits with any real expectations of a win.
If Woods believes that, maybe we will see him at the Wyndham next week.
He still has a chance to make the cut at the PGA Championship, as he hit consecutive birdies on the second and third holes Friday, providing some hope for another run over his remaining final five holes.
He bogeyed 18 to make the turn at one-over and found himself scrambling on an inward run that included three bogeys and a birdie.
It was Woods’ fourth missed cut of the year in 10 starts.
“I finally figured something out today on the putting green, but the damage had already been done”, added Woods, who was in danger of missing the cut after his three-over 75 in the opening round. I finally rolled the ball coming in and unfortunately it was too little, too late.
While disappointed by missing the cut, Woods sees good things ahead.
When he returns Saturday morning, he’ll face a chip shot from the deep rough on No. 14. He’s also planning to play in the Hero Challenge that he hosts in December, which moves to the Bahamas this year after being held in Orlando last year, and there will be no shortage of invitations worldwide. But if he doesn’t believe what he’s telling us, he’s at another crossroads. I was driving it with them, I was sometimes hitting [approach] shots inside them.
Rory McIlroy shot a 68 to reach 6-under 210.
