Army pilot, military cop are 1st women to pass Ranger School

Ranger School is so highly revered as to be practically mythological within Army culture.

“Haver was the most intense; she was the most vocal, she wasn’t afraid to speak up”, Sgt.

“I couldn’t be more proud and humbled by the experience”, Haver said.

“If there were any remaining questions about whether women could serve as combat leaders, those questions have been answered”, she said. Only the two women and 94 men met all the requirements for graduation. “She was faster, stronger, her ability was not to be matched”.

Haver and Griest were the only two females to finish the training out of 19 women who began the program.

The women and men endured several phases, including training in woods, mountains., and swamplands.

It’s not clear what awaits the female graduates, however.

While they are now unable to join the Ranger squad, senior officials told the AP the military services are poised to allow women to serve in most front-line combat jobs, including special operations forces. The Pentagon is not expected to make a final decision about the roles of women in combat until later this year.

Carter noted that the services must report to him by Sept. 30 on their “justifications, if there are any” for seeking an exception for certain billets rather than opening them up to all candidates, regardless of gender, who can meet the standards.

His fellow Ranger students responded with “a lot of deer-in-the-headlights looks”, he said.

The military made the pair and some of their Ranger classmates available to the media Thursday to discuss the milestone.
