Gunman opens fire on high-speed train traveling from Amsterdam to Paris

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: “We are aware of reports of shots being fired on a train in France”.

“The passengers are safe, the situation has been brought under control”, train operator Thalys, which is jointly owned by the national rail companies of Belgium, France and Germany, said on Twitter.

He said two American passengers subdued the gunman and one is in hospital with serious wounds.

Another man was taken away for treatment by emergency services in a wheelchair.

One of the seriously injured victims, who is aged between 30 and 40, was conscious when he was taken from the station at 6.50pm local time.

A spokesman for France’s interior ministry said a suspect is in custody and the train has been evacuated. “Everything is being done to shed light on this tragedy”, the French leader said in a statement.

Officials said no motive had been determined, but Cazeneuve referred to the incident as a possible terrorist attack, calling it barbaric and the gunman “extremely violent”.

A third individual, known French actor Jean-Hugues Anglade, was injured as well, and was said to have raised the alarm over the incident.
