Robert Griffin III could be back in time for next exhibition game
Griffin, under constant pressure by the Detroit Lions’ defense after nearly every pass play, left the game in the second quarter of the Redskins’ 21-17 victory.
The Redskins initially said their starting quarterback was questionable to return, but later ruled him out for the rest of the game.
Griffin may have also sustained injury to his ego after being mocked on social media for calling himself the best quarterback in the NFL earlier this week.
Who’s to blame for Robert Griffin III being knocked out of Thursday’s preseason game against the Lions with a concussion?
Griffin went 2 for 5 for 8 yards on 4 possessions for Washington (2-0).
Griffin was hurt early in the second quarter when he fumbled the ball without contact while scrambling, then got landed on by defenders. Lions’ defensive lineman Corey Wootton fell on top of Griffin and appeared to tweak the area between the quarterback’s neck and right shoulder, while his head was hit to the side. Stafford finished 6-of-8 passing for 78 yards and led the Lions to points on his first drive, thanks to a 49-yard Matt Prater field goal.
No date has been set for his return, but Gruden revealed that the 25-year-old will continue to be the starter.
They tripled that total with three sacks in the first half of their second preseason game at Washington.
If Griffin is going to be successful and have success the offensive line has to play better.
Recognizing that Griffin III can’t control the plays that are called or the performance of the offensive line, Theismann still expressed frustration with RGIII’s learning curve.
After watching Robert Griffin III get beat up Thursday night, the Twitter debate raged on: Should the Washington Redskins have even sent him out there for the fourth series? He was hit on six pass attempts, including on quick drops on which he threw quickly.
Gruden repeatedly said during training camp that he had seen progress from Griffin, but there was little evidence of that Thursday, thanks in part to little pass protection. “I have no idea as far as the third pre-season game, fourth one, right now”. We’ve got to fix that.
Lions: Coach Jim Caldwell said about Orlovsky: “Dan’s obviously a guy who that has a real good understanding of systems”. It’s not that unusual for a large number of penalties in a preseason game, but in the preseason win over the Jets last week the Lions had just three penalties.
In his place, Colt McCoy took over as the Redskins’ quarterback.
