The Final Girls Found in an Official Trailer
With plenty of jokes about bad writing, fake blood, and the fact that “everyone who has sex in this movie dies”, The Final Girls aims to please cinephiles and ’80s nostalgists.
Not to be confused with the upcoming horror film Final Girl (which does not look very good), The Final Girls is a charming and clever ode to camp slasher movies, and the first trailer lays that charm on pretty thick.
The film, directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, played incredibly well at SXSW, with standing ovations and applause breaks after arguably the funniest striptease ever recorded and the most heartfelt boob flash in cinematic history.
It stars Taissa Farmiga as Max, a young girl whose late-mother (Malin Akerman) was the star of a popular old-school horror movie like Friday the 13th. In order to survive – and maybe save her mom – Max and her friends have to use their knowledge of the film and conventional horror tropes to try and subvert the expected.
Of all the little sub genres that exist within horror, horror-comedy has to be my favorite amongst them. They soon realize they are trapped inside the cult classic movie and must team up with the fictional and ill-fated camp counselors, including Max’s mom as the scream queen, to battle the films machete-wielding killer.
