Baylor coach Art Briles is in trouble
So I turned, as I often do with these stories, to Kathy Redmond Brown, who founded the National Coalition Against Violent Athletes and who was once sexually assaulted by a Nebraska football player.
Instead, Ukwuachu was sentenced to six months behind bars and 10 years probation, according to CNN affiliates KTWK and KETK, for sexually assaulting a fellow Baylor student in 2013. He was not indicted on the charges by a grand jury until almost a year later.
Washington coach Chris Petersen says he “thoroughly apprised” Baylor coach Art Briles about the circumstances of Sam Ukwuachu’s dismissal from Boise State, long before the player’s sexual assault conviction this week.
“No mention of anything beyond Sam being depressed and needing to come home”, Briles said, per Olson.
Briles and his administrative enablers were willing to ignore that risk because Ukwuachu was good at football, just like Alabama’s Nick Saban rationalized Jonathan Taylor’s domestic violence issues at Georgia (he’s since been dismissed).
Ukwuachu was a Freshman All-American at Boise State in 2012 before he was dismissed from the Broncos program for undisclosed reasons.
Briles is famous in the coaching fraternity for accepting transfers who’d been in trouble at their former schools and winning with them.
In an interview with the website Rivals.com after he transferred to Baylor, Ukuwachu said the coaching staff at Baylor, “knew everything and were really supportive”, according to Texas Monthly. He transferred to Baylor and sat out the 2013 season. But his ex-girlfriend testified she’d been punched several times by him at Boise State University and was also choked.
Although Petersen’s remarks don’t specifically reference Ukwuachu’s alleged violence against a woman while at Boise State, his clarification casts doubt on Briles’ contention that he was unaware of Ukwuachu’s past.
After defensive end Sam Ukwuachu was sentenced Friday in a Waco court, Baylor President Ken Starr called for a “comprehensive internal inquiry into the circumstances associated with the case and the conduct of the offices involved”. Adopt the SEC proposal, which prohibits giving a scholarship or playing time-or even practice reps-to any transfer who has been “subject to official university of athletics department disciplinary action” during enrollment at any previous collegiate institution “due to serious misconduct”. “That’s all I’ve got to say about it”.
Sam Ukwuachu is a former Baylor football player.
Baylor University issued a statement about sexual assault following the court decision.
Ukwuachu graduated from Baylor this past spring and he is a graduate of Pearland High School. And whether its head coach lied about checking up on the background of a player who is now a convicted rapist. Boise State had dismissed him for an unspecified violation of team rules.
Baylor, the world’s largest Baptist University, has faced criticism for not doing enough to investigate and discipline Ukwuachu in the case that resulted in a criminal conviction.
“Those feelings have subsided some and we’re happy about that”, said Hunter.
