Japanese Drinks Firm Set To Advertise On The Moon In October
SpaceX plans to use a rover on the moon to deliver the can of Pocari Sweat.
A Japanese pharmaceutical company has teamed up with private space firms to deliver the first ever sports drink to the Moon. A rover designed by Atrobotic will carry the can to Bürg crater, where it will remain indefinitely.
It is hoped a future astronaut on the Moon will open the capsule – if it survives the extreme environment. SpaceX believes that the money for advertising on the moon is going to start pouring in.
To achieve its astro-ad, the company has designed a one-kilogram titanium can specially suited for space travel. Astrobotic does state that there are, “numerous opportunities for marketing on the moon from corporate sponsorship, educational, and inspirational marketing”.
While one would expect the unique ad concept to be fairly costly, the price tag wont reach stratospheric rates, USA Today noted. This Pennsylvania based company has shown, through public records, that their lower prices per kilo (2.2 pounds) of cargo, can run around $1.2 million.
This can isn’t a liquid. Consumers then have to add water, which would an astronaut would either bring with them, or obtain it locally via mining the moon for oxygen to combine with hydrogen to make water, according to a process now in development by NASA.
But the campaign isnt only about the beverage ad. Pocari Sweats space can will also play the role of a time capsule.
But don’t feel left out, the can will also feature random space messages from people around the world that will be etched into the capsule’s base plate using lasers.
Mixing space and advertisement has been around for awhile.
In 1997, an Israeli dairy company filmed a commercial aboard Russia’s Mir space station, and in 2001 Pizza Hut made a special delivery of vacuum-sealed pizzas to the worldwide Space Station.
We suppose it had to happen some day, but it’s odd to see it a reality: Advertising is coming to Earth’s moon, and it’s not as pricey as you’d think.
