Astros’ Fiers has no-hitter through 8 innings
Astros starter Mike Fiers has no-hit the Dodgers through seven innings. Altuve, then got tackled by Carlos Correa in center field in part of the excitement.
Speaking of things that don’t happen often, at least lately, the ‘Stros have been giving their fans reasons to cheer all season. Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma blanked the Orioles back on August 12.
“Oh man, this crowd was going insane”, Fiers said.
The under is 4-0 in the Astros last 4 games as an underdog of +110 to +150 and 7-0 in their last 7 games as an underdog.
Fiers was wicked all night pumping high fastballs by hitters and breaking balls at the shins with his over-the-top deception. I think we would’ve felt worse about that, maybe, not getting hits with guys in scoring position.
“He threw me five straight fastballs and I think he threw me maybe two fastballs in my three at-bats before that”, Turner said. “He earned every opportunity to finish that”. Cincinnati plated a run on two ninth-inning errors – including one by Johnson – to take the game 1-0.
Cole Hamels with Philadelphia, San Francisco’s Chris Heston and Washington’s Max Scherzer also have thrown no-hitters this season. The Astros acquired Fiers along with Carlos Gomez from the Brewers on July 30 in exchange for Domingo Santana and minor leaguers Brett Phillips, Josh Hader, and Adrian Houser. This was something else, though.
Major League Baseball Network picked up the feed of the game as Fiers was going for the no-hitter in the ninth inning, leading to a much larger TV audience. He struck out 10 and retired the final 21 batters.
Fiers had shown little emotion to that point, but he leapt off the mound and pumped his fist when home plate umpire John Tumpane punched out Pederson. He got stronger as the game went on. The Dodgers (67-53) had not been no-hit since June 8, 2012. “But at the end of the day it’s one loss and we have to move on”.
BOSTON – Rookie Henry Owens pitched eight solid innings, Josh Rutledge hit a two-run homer, and Boston handed Johnny Cueto his worst start since he was picked up by Kansas City. As a franchise, the Astros have thrown 11 no-hitters, with right-hander Darryl Kile recording the last individual no-hitter for Houston on September 8, 1993, against the New York Mets at the Astrodome.
