Deputies: Law enforcement officer shot in Port St. John; injuries unknown
Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said that his deputies had been working with the Titusville Police Department to take a woman into custody at the Port St. John home.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. on August 20, 2015 in the 1000 block of Covina Street in the unincorporated area of Cocoa.
The alleged prostitute, a female, was taken into custody, Ivey said. Deputies returned fire striking the suspect.
The deputy and male occupant were transported for medical treatment.
The sheriff says one deputy was shot and is in critical condition in surgery.
“They were all wearing their tactical vests with their clear markings on the front of them, and I really don’t have an idea of what prompted this at this point”, Sheriff Wayne Ivey said during a late night press conference. He was listed in stable condition.
Sheriff’s Office Homicide agents and Crime Scene Investigators have been on scene throughout the night and are still processing evidence.
Upon conclusion of the investigations, the cases will be presented to the State Attorney for review.
No information about a suspect or the deputy’s identity has been released.
The other deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
