Check out the first three minutes of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead
According to spoilers, Rodriguez’s character, Liza, is the mother of Chris and the ex-wife of the English teacher Travis Manawa as portrayed by Cliff Curtis. For example, by the time a friend of Nick’s sister Alicia gets ill, Nick and his mother have already seen and killed a zombie.
She was there to discuss her latest role as Madison Clark on AMC’s The Walking Dead spinoff Fear the Walking Dead, which premieres on the network this Sunday at 9pm.
When asked what she believes to be the universal aspect of Fear the Walking Dead, she was quick to reply with “survival”, something that won’t come as a surprise.
Zap2it: How drastic is the evolution of these characters in Season 1’s six episodes? They will both embrace or not embrace the apocalypse in different ways and they will see elements in each other that they didn’t know were there before….
Red would make it, too. “It must be this regular situation that I do every day”. I’m actually a giant fan of the original show. But we know better! “It must be fake”. It’s the people looking for supplies in what’s left. They’re not decomposed yet, they’re not rotten.
We viewers know she was a zombie – or a “walker” in the world of The Walking Dead, which steadfastly avoids the term zombie, with all its pop culture implications. I think Lea DeLaria (who plays Big Boo) would take some names, for sure.
For fans of this surreal animated comedy, the adventures of Master Shake, Meatwad and Frylock make “South Park”, “Family Guy” and “Bob’s Burgers” seem normal, and they like it that way. That’s their scope, that’s it. Some people have not even gotten out of Burbank. But luckily, Fear The Walking Dead is all about filling in the blanks that we missed in that specific time period. She’s been very protected. I feel like so much goes on in the world between disease, pandemics, terrorism, ISIS, that there is no way. This is temporary. You could have coffee with Bob Hope yesterday and now he’s trying to eat your face off. There’s that sort of psychological aspect of “you look human, can I bash your skull in?” said Mercedes Mason (Ofelia Salazar). No sunshine and lollipops for the characters, one of whom is a drug addict who uncovers one of the first “infected” while coming down inside a trash-covered flop house. But now, doing the press and promoting it, I’ve started picking up really good tips. Like I said, we have a window of time.
“One downside to the prequel structure, however, is that the audience knows so much more than the characters”. If we put a zombie on the subway will people continue to use their iPhone while the person next to them is lunch? For starters, the world is still mostly whole and hasn’t yet gone totally to hell. “For him, it’s never been about what caused it; it’s always been about the impact it has on people”, Erickson says. He found the pilot “grounded” with a portrayal of usually overlooked East LA and with its fresh take on what masculinity can be for such a character. It’s like, really? That works? “Things are already incredibly tough for them and then there’s the apocalypse”. Will she be the fighter, the leader, the nurturer? Initially struggling with blending a family, Travis will have to deal with all that and more as he and Madison find themselves thrust into the very beginning of the zombie apocalypse.
Here we go again. “Weak”, she replies. Maybe the zombies are onto something. So I think we’re really honest with each other and pretty good parents. Obviously don’t stop and talk, just back away quietly and get out of dodge. In keeping with The Walking Dead, this is a grounded representation of what would happen to a family as the world is collapsing around them because of this contagion. They probably have more of a chance at this stage.
